HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL CENTER “ANCIENT TARAZ”

The archaeological park "Ancient Taraz" was opened for the 550th anniversary of the Kazakh Khanate. The complex is located on an area of 20 hectares, previously owned by the Central Market. What can you explore here? The ruins of an old fortress, a mosque, a madrasah, the foundations of residential buildings, the remains of a water pipeline and much more. There is also a museum with a collection of 2,800 exhibits. The unique project is included in the list of 100 sacred places of Kazakhstan and claims to be included in the List of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

KARAKHAN MAUSOLEUM

An architectural monument of the XI century. It was built over the grave of one of the representatives of the Karakhanid dynasty. The mausoleum is located in the city center at the intersection of Tole bi and Baizak Batyr streets. In 1906, the mausoleum was reconstructed, several terracotta bricks with Muslim inscriptions and a tombstone remained from the original building. Taraz residents like to visit Karakhan mausoleum during wedding festivities, and then go to the grave of his beloved Aisha-bibi.

TORTKUL CARAVANSERAI

The only museumized caravanserai in Kazakhstan. Initially, there was a mound on this place. After the excavations, the structure was dated 6-7 centuries AD. In 2010, the facility was reconstructed, five-meter walls were erected, and the interior was recreated. The caravanserai is spread over an area of 80 square meters. Since 2014, Tortkul has been welcoming tourists. Ethnic festivals are held in Tortkul, where tourists can see how national Kazakh dishes are prepared – kurt, bauyrsak, kumis, zhent, get acquainted with the art of berkutchi, play national games.

“TEKTURMAS” ARCHITECTURAL COMPLEX

The mausoleum is an architectural monument of the XIV century. Sultan Mahmud Khan, a local saint, is buried here. It is said that there was once a Zoroastrian cemetery on this place. In 1935 it was destroyed. In 2001, the public foundation "Tekturmas" restored a new mausoleum on the site of the former one based on a preserved photograph of the end of the XIX century. Crowds of pilgrims from all over Kazakhstan flock here. By the way, the hill where Tekturmas stands is an excellent point for admiring the picturesque views of the city.
